The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Synesthesie built Bad Genius in 2026 as part of their expanding catalog. The brand's other releases include Substance, Blow, and Strange Days, each occupying its own territory within the house's range. Bad Genius fits that catalog: a composition built on the friction between gourmand comfort and resinous intent. The name itself reads as a dare. There's no apology in the nuttiness, no softening of the spice. What arrives is what stays. Almond and pistachio offer an immediate sweetness, while frankincense and elemi push back with smoke and resin before the sweetness can settle into anything too easy. Mate brings a green, slightly bitter edge that prevents the gourmand elements from collapsing into pure dessert, and licorice threads through the composition like a half-remembered flavor.
The composition's architecture is what earns its name. Almond and pistachio carry a sweetness that reads almost indulgent on first impression, then frankincense and elemi arrive to cut it with smoke before the sugar can claim victory. Mate threads a green bitterness through the center, keeping the gourmand elements from reading as one-note. Licorice winds through the heart like something half-remembered from a candy drawer, neither fully sweet nor fully sharp. Cashmere softens the resins around it without neutralizing their presence.
The evolution
The first ten minutes belong to almond and pink pepper, bright and warm, with bergamot lifting the edges into something almost sparkling. Frankincense doesn't wait long to make its claim, settling in alongside myrtle and turning the opening toward something resinous and incense-leaning. By the thirty-minute mark, the heart takes shape: pistachio rounds out the sweetness, mate introduces a green bitterness, and licorice weaves between them, landing somewhere between anise and smoke. Cashmere softens everything without flattening it. The drydown arrives slowly, and it's where the fragrance earns its composure. Amber and tonka bean build a warm foundation, elemi resin adds a peppery lift, patchouli anchors the composition in earth, and vanilla smooths the last rough edges. What's surprising is how long the almond lingers, ghosting through the base like a memory that refuses to fade.
Cultural impact
Bad Genius joins the brand's growing catalog alongside Substance, Blow, and Strange Days, each occupying its own space within the range. For wearers drawn to gourmand warmth but wary of the genre's tendency toward pure sweetness, this one offers a resinous backbone that keeps it from drifting too far into dessert territory. The combination of almond, pistachio, and tonka delivers that gourmand richness, while the frankincense, elemi, and patchouli introduce enough smoke and earth to keep the composition reading as something more deliberate. It's a scent that holds its sweetness without surrendering to it.
