The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Modus Vivendi translates from Latin as method of living, a precise name for SśAINT's 2021 release. Co-founded by Ciara and Elle in Sydney, the brand built its identity around clean, gender-neutral compositions and sustainable packaging. This particular scent arose from their fascination with luxury hospitality design, spaces engineered for comfort and visual coherence. Their goal was to capture that pristine aesthetic, crisp bed linens, polished surfaces, deliberate simplicity, in a fragrance that could travel on skin beyond those curated rooms.
The note selection reflects deliberate curation at every stage. Cardamom and leather were chosen to evoke both spice and raw material richness, the sensory vocabulary of boutique hotels. Iris bridges these with its understated grace. The heart of violet leaf, papyrus, and pine introduces an unexpected freshness, referencing the greenery and natural materials often found in thoughtful hospitality design. Pairing this cooler mid-section with the warmer opening creates an olfactory dialogue between warmth and restraint. Cashmere musk and sandalwood serve as natural bridges, their soft woody-musky character transitioning smoothly from the papyrus-tinged coolness into the amber and cedarwood finish.
The evolution
The fragrance opens with cardamom, leather, and iris working in concert, the spice, the warmth, the softness. This initial phase is deliberately assertive, making its intentions clear. As violet leaf emerges alongside papyrus and pine, the composition shifts toward a cooler, more restrained register, echoing the breathing space of minimalist interiors. The drydown then bridges the gap between natural luxury and urban refinement: cashmere musk and sandalwood introduce a tactile softness that feels almost textile, amber adds a quiet warmth, and cedarwood provides the final chord, a woody dryness that recalls polished wood paneling. Mapping this arc reveals a clear logic: invite confidently, intrigue through contrast, resolve with elegance.
Cultural impact
Modus Vivendi arrived at a moment when gender‑neutral fragrances were gaining cultural traction, reflecting broader conversations about identity and inclusivity. Its clean‑ingredient ethos resonated with consumers seeking transparency, while the blend of cardamom, leather, and iris invoked a modern reinterpretation of classic masculinity. By positioning itself as both sophisticated and approachable, the scent contributed to a shift in how niche houses communicate values, encouraging other brands to explore minimalist storytelling and sustainable sourcing. This ripple effect can be seen in subsequent releases that prioritize ethical sourcing and minimalist design, marking Modus Vivendi as a subtle catalyst in the evolving fragrance landscape.
