The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Odisiaque No6 is the sixth expression in Sous le Manteau's collection of olfactory secrets, fragrances meant to be worn close, revealed only to those nearby. The name odysiaque refers to a journey, an odyssey, and this particular scent follows that arc: a clear beginning, a complex middle, and a drydown that lingers like a memory. Perfumer Nathalie Feisthauer built it around a tension that defines the entire composition, the bright, almost astringent green of Egyptian geranium and Calabrian bergamot against the warm, dry depth of hay absolute and tobacco absolute. The result is a fragrance that opens one way and settles into something else entirely.
What makes Odisiaque No6 interesting is the cascarilla. Steam-distilled from the dried bark of Croton eluteria, native to the Caribbean, cascarilla occupies a strange middle ground, terpenic and fresh at its top, spicy and peppery at its heart, with a sweet woody undertone that most people never encounter because they've never smelled it. Mate adds a bitter green quality that reinforces the herbal character. Liatris spicata, a North American flowering plant also known as blazing star, contributes a subtle floral note that softens what could otherwise read as too medicinal. The combination of these four heart materials creates a passage that takes time to traverse, not a sharp transition but a slow deepening.
The evolution
The opening announces itself quickly: Calabrian bergamot and Egyptian geranium hit the skin with a bright, almost astringent quality, like crushed leaves, slightly citrus, with the green bitterness of geranium petals. The cascarilla arrives within minutes, bringing its peppery allspice warmth alongside mate's bitter green character. For the first hour, the fragrance reads as herbal, aromatic, and slightly medicinal. Then the heart develops. Elemi resin adds a subtle piney sweetness while liatris spicata introduces its delicate floral note, softening the sharpness. Tobacco begins to assert itself as a smoky undertone. By the third hour, the base takes over. Hay absolute provides a dry, warm, slightly animalic quality, the smell of dried grasses in late summer. Tobacco absolute gives richness and body. Haitian vetiver contributes its earthy, smoky, root-like character. Tonka bean absolute brings a subtle sweetness that rounds everything out.
Cultural impact
Odisiaque No6 occupies a specific space in niche perfumery: aromatic-tobacco compositions are uncommon in this register, and the herbal character of the opening sets it apart from sweeter tobacco fragrances that dominate the category. The 2021 launch arrived with recognition from The Fragrance Foundation Awards, placing the house in broader conversation. What distinguishes this fragrance is its commitment to the arc, not a single note throughout the wear, but a passage from green brightness to warm earthiness that rewards patience. The moderate sillage suits those who want presence without announcement.
