The beginning
Nocturne arrived in 2022 from Soma Parfums. The name sets the terms before you smell a thing. A nocturne is music of the night, something that belongs to the hours when most compositions have already clocked out. What hits first is a bright citrus opening, sharp and lifted, with a green herbal thread running alongside it. That opening doesn't rush. It sits, breathes, and slowly gives way to a woody heart where cedar and sandalwood take over the conversation, warmed by a soft amber resin underneath. The drydown is where Nocturne earns its name. The citrus fades into a smoky, almost mineral shadow, and the woods deepen into something that feels closer to bark and embers than to a clean fresh-cut plank.
The structure does something most aromatic-woody compositions skip. The opening pulls in two directions at once. Grapefruit, orange, and mint keep the top bright and alive. Pink pepper and orange blossom tip it toward something warmer, almost narcotic. That tension is the whole architecture of Nocturne, the reason it reads as nighttime even before the base settles in. Most woody-citrus fragrances collapse into one mood by the thirty-minute mark. This one holds the argument the whole way through.
The evolution
The first spray is all snap. Grapefruit and orange hit cold and clean, mint threading through like eucalyptus in reverse. Pink pepper sits underneath, not loud, but it changes the temperature of the citrus from breakfast juice to something that knows what time it is. Orange blossom adds the faintest white-flower sweetness, just enough to keep the top from reading sharp. This opening lasts longer than you'd expect, twenty minutes of cool brightness before anything woody shows up. The handoff to the heart is gradual. Cedar arrives first, dry and structural, then vetiver grounds everything with its earthy green bitterness. Juniper adds a gin-and-tonic clarity, a slightly bracing quality that keeps the woods from going dense. Jasmine is the surprise here, quiet rather than indolic, threading through the cedar like smoke under a door. An hour and a half in, the vanilla starts to surface. It doesn't announce itself. It just makes everything softer, warmer, more human.
Cultural impact
Within the house's catalog, Nocturne sits in the aromatic-woody corner of Soma's output. It reads as a study in restraint, a citrus-woods hybrid that doesn't lean fully into either family. The opening carries bergamot and a green herbal flicker, bright but never sharp or candied. As the citrus settles, the cedar and sandalwood move forward, and the whole composition shifts toward a drier, more grounded register. The amber base adds a low warmth without pushing the scent into sweet territory.
