The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Crushcrushcrush is Sixteen92's love letter to a specific era: the early 2000s scene and emo moment. The NoT a PhAsE Collection takes its name from the cultural shorthand that defined a generation's emotional vocabulary, that overwhelming, all-consuming feeling of being completely swept up in someone. Claire Baxter channeled that energy into scent, translating the sugar-high intensity of MySpace-era confession culture into a wearable composition. The name itself says everything twice, the way a teenager would.
What makes Crushcrushcrush work is the burnt sugar. It's the detail that elevates this from simple gourmand sweetness into something with real character. The sweetness isn't pristine, it carries a slight char at the edges, like caramel left a moment too long on the heat. Bourbon vanilla does the heavy lifting in the drydown, warm and intimate, but it's the interplay with the burnt sugar that gives the fragrance its tension. Sweet, but with something to prove.
The evolution
The opening is bright and immediate, orange zest cutting through with neroli's clean floral edge. Within minutes, the marshmallow arrives, soft and pillowy, settling over everything like a cloud. The burnt sugar doesn't rush. It builds underneath, slowly darkening the composition until the mid-phase feels like warm toffee left in a sunny window. Then the bourbon vanilla takes over completely. The drydown is warm, close, intimate, the kind of scent that only someone standing beside you would catch. On most skin types, expect 4-6 hours of wear. The sillage stays moderate throughout.
Cultural impact
The NoT a PhAsE Collection captures a specific cultural moment, the MySpace era of all-caps confessions and over-the-top emotion. Crushcrushcrush is for anyone who remembers what it felt like to scream love into a computer screen. It channels the raw, unfiltered energy of AIM away messages and LiveJournal entries, when expressing emotion online was an art form.
