The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
S Aquamarine arrived in 2013 as the third expression in Shakira's S line, following the original 2010 launch and the 2011 Eau Florale flanker. Shakira herself described the concept simply: the ocean as a source of pure, elemental sensuality. 'With this new fragrance I wanted to express something pure, elemental and sensual,' she said at launch. 'For me, the ocean represents all of these things.' The composition was developed to capture that coastal spirit, translating the idea of oceanic freedom into a scent that could appeal to both dedicated fans and newcomers to the line. The resulting fragrance balances bright, shimmering top notes with a warm, enveloping drydown, creating something that feels both fresh and deeply personal on the skin.
What makes S Aquamarine distinctive within its own line is the way the ozonic notes don't simply open the fragrance, they persist through the heart and into the drydown, threading the entire composition with a marine, almost saline quality. The tropical florals in the heart (frangipani, tiaré, jasmine) provide a creamy richness that balances the cool aquatic top, preventing the fragrance from reading as purely fresh or linear. The base of cedar and amber adds just enough warmth to keep the drydown from feeling transparent. It's a composition that plays between cool and warm, bright and intimate, a tension that gives it more depth than its straightforward name suggests.
The evolution
The opening bursts with passion fruit and tangerine, their tart brightness immediately conjuring tropical warmth. Bergamot and ozonic notes lift these citruses into something almost marine, like sea air mingling with ripe fruit at a coastal market. As the initial spark softens, the heart unfolds gradually. Frangipani, jasmine, and tiaré introduce a creamier, more lush quality, their buttery richness shifting the composition from sharp brightness to velvety warmth. The tropical florals layer seamlessly, adding depth without overwhelming the translucent quality that defines the fragrance. Cedar and amber eventually emerge as the drydown takes hold, wrapping any lingering sweetness in woody warmth and preventing the scent from feeling entirely transparent.
Cultural impact
S by Shakira Aquamarine reflected Shakira's international appeal and her ability to translate personal inspiration into something widely resonant. The tropical aquatic trend of the era found a natural fit with her global audience, and this fragrance captured that momentum. Its release built on the established S line, offering a fresh interpretation that maintained the brand's identity while expanding its olfactory territory. The scent's blend of bright fruit, lush florals, and warm woods positioned it as a distinctive entry in the celebrity fragrance landscape, one that balanced accessibility with enough complexity to reward repeated wearing.
