The beginning
Clean Slate arrived in 2024 from Seven Gates, a Turkish house with a notably restrained catalog and a quiet, deliberate aesthetic across its releases. The Duality Collection, of which this is part, is one of the line's clearer conceptual groupings, a series defined by paired compositions rather than single-note explorations. The fragrance was composed by Emilie Bouge, whose name appears on the brand's credits for the collection. What stands out immediately is the weight of intention behind the formula. It doesn't read as a casual release or a crowd-pleasing crowd-favorite. It reads as a statement piece, something assembled with a specific posture in mind.
The composition earns that title. Absinthe and incense open with an almost aggressive clarity, a bitter herbal brightness that refuses to fade politely. Then the whisky and birch move in, warming the structure from inside. It smells less like a fresh start and more like the walk away from one, when the air still carries the last room you were in. Castoreum and leather anchor it to something animal and grounded. There's nothing stripped-back here. Nothing pared down. It wears like something heavy and considered, a composition that wants to be felt rather than glanced at.
The evolution
The absinthe leads, sharp and herbal, green and anise-edged, with cinnamon and nutmeg warming the corners. The opening reads cold at first, almost bracing, the kind of clarity that fills a room before you've even registered the individual notes. Incense soon enters, thickening the air with a resinous, smoky presence that shifts the composition from bracing to enveloping. The heart arrives with whisky's sweetness cutting through birch tar's smoky leather and guaiac wood's dark grain. The boozy note weaves rather than dominates, adding a fermented warmth that complicates the smoke. Vetiver grounds the mid-phase with a dry, earthy edge that keeps the sweetness honest, pulling the composition back toward something raw and unsweetened. As the hours pass, the whisky recedes, leaving leather and castoreum to take over. That castoreum is unmistakable.
