Why it exists.
The beginning
Mood Canvas launched in 2024 as part of Seven Gates' Duality Collection, and the fragrance wears its inspiration on its sleeve: Istanbul. Not the postcard version, the one with cats and mosaics, but the sensory overload of it. The city's grand bazaars, the Turkish coffee that's been on the flame for an hour too long, the incense smoke that drifts out of doorways you weren't planning to enter. Perfumer Maïa Lernout composed this as a portrait of place, treating the city as a single living canvas of scent. The bazaar idea runs deeper than a name on a label: it shows up in the layering, the way cardamom and pepper crowd together in the opening like vendors competing for attention, and how the incense and cedarwood settle into something slower and more deliberate.
What's interesting here is how the spice notes interact in the upper register. Pink pepper, black pepper, cardamom, and chamomile all sit close together at the top, and they're not racing to be the brightest. They share the space, each contributing a different kind of heat: the peppers bring snap and bite, the cardamom adds a cooler, almost minty warmth, and chamomile softens everything with its herbal, tea-like quality.
The evolution
The opening arrives loud and immediate: black pepper and pink pepper crack open first, and they're not polite about it. The heat is sharp and almost electrical, the kind of spark that makes you lean in rather than pull away. As the first minutes pass, cardamom and chamomile settle in underneath, softening the edges into something warmer, more rounded. The chamomile brings a hay-like, sun-warmed quality that fills in the gaps between the sharper spices. Eventually the caramel shows up properly, and it changes the whole weather. The sweetness arrives like a slow tide rather than a wave, dark and slightly burnt at the edges, and it pulls the composition away from pure spice into something richer and more complex.
Cultural impact
Mood Canvas arrives as part of Seven Gates' Duality Collection, a series that brings place-based portraiture into the house's lineup. The Istanbul inspiration gives the release a clear cultural anchor, building the entire composition around materials that read as distinctly local: Turkish coffee, resinous incense, and the layered spice vocabulary of the bazaar. This kind of place-driven fragrance has become a recognizable genre in independent perfumery, and Mood Canvas enters it with a formula built almost entirely from materials associated with one city.
