The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Heroine arrived in 2024 as part of Seven Gates' Duality Collection, a line built on contrast, on tensions that don't resolve so much as coexist. The name says everything: not a hero, but a heroine. The fragrance draws its references from women who broke through barriers, women named Frida, Sabiha, Mahsa, figures who moved through resistance and came out unmistakable. Perfumer Koray Sevinç built the composition around that duality: strength and fragility in the same breath, the predatory and the delicate occupying the same skin.
What makes Heroine unusual is the structural decision to open with cognac rather than citrus or aldehydes. Cognac is warm, slightly boozy, and carries a depth that bergamot alone couldn't provide. It gives the violet leaf something to orbit around, a luminous green note that could have read sharp or fleeting instead becomes part of a broader aromatic architecture. The heart centers on iris, but ambrette seed absolute adds an animalic undertone that keeps the powdery florals from becoming precious. Mimosa contributes a honeyed softness that bridges the opening and the base. The result is a fragrance that smells expensive without smelling safe.
The evolution
The opening arrives in cognac and violet leaf, warm, slightly boozy, with a green bite that catches you off guard. Bergamot appears in the first minutes, brightening the edges before retreating. By the time you reach the heart, the cognac has settled into something softer, and the iris emerges as a powdery bloom underscored by ambrette seed's musky warmth. Mimosa adds a honeyed floral note that feels almost nostalgic, like a memory of something you can't quite place. The drydown is where Heroine earns its name: white musk and vanilla absolute create a skin-warm base, while sandalwood and vetiver CO2 keep the powdery quality alive without tipping into retro territory. Oakmoss lingers at the edges, adding an earthy depth that survives into the final hours. As the fragrance settles, the interplay between warmth and coolness becomes more apparent.
Cultural impact
Seven Gates' Duality Collection explores the contrast between strength and fragility, and Heroine embodies this tension through its composition. The blend of cognac, violet leaf, and bergamot creates a warm, slightly boozy opening that challenges conventional fragrance expectations while maintaining an elegant, powdery floral heart. The fragrance's character suggests a departure from mainstream perfumery conventions, offering something that feels both bold and refined.
