The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Scorpio Collection Gold arrived in 2017 as part of a fragrance house named after the zodiac sign. The label approaches its catalog with a sign-based identity, channeling intensity and bold character into each release. Gold is the brawny, wood-heavy entry in that line, and it lives up to the billing. The brand's own description frames it as a fiery composition for the audacious man with unshakeable charisma, but the scent itself does the real talking. Star anise cracks open the bottle with a bright, almost fizzy energy, bergamot and grapefruit keep the air moving through the opening, and the whole composition settles into a base of cedar, sandalwood, and a tonka-vanilla finish that holds close to the skin.
The star anise up top is what gives Gold its personality. It opens with a licorice-tinged sweetness that reads almost like black candy, sharp and aromatic, with grapefruit cutting through to keep the spice from turning dusty. Bergamot rides underneath, adding a bright structural layer that prevents the opening from collapsing into pure confection. That anise note is where Gold finds its identity, and it pairs unusually well with the citrus top to create a bright, almost sparkling entry. Once the heart settles, guaiac wood in the base earns attention.
The evolution
The first ten minutes belong to star anise, and it announces itself with confidence. There's a sweet-spice lift here that reads almost like black licorice with a citrus chaser, grapefruit keeping it from going too syrupy, the whole opening bright and almost effervescent. Bergamot is present but quiet, more structural than starring, providing a clean base for the anise to sparkle against. Around the fifteen-minute mark, the anise begins to back off and the cedar-geranium-jasmine heart takes over. This is where Gold earns its woody label, the cedar is dry and pencil-shaving sharp, the geranium adds a green herbal edge that keeps the heart from feeling too clean or too soapy, and the jasmine contributes a soft floral murmur that adds dimension without sweetness. By the one-hour mark, the base has fully claimed the composition.
Cultural impact
Gold's star anise opening is what earns it recognition. Wearers describe it as an accessible, evening-appropriate fragrance that leans more warm and powdery than loud, and its anise top is distinctive enough to stand out in a crowded marketplace. The composition reads as warm and approachable, the kind of scent that performs well in cooler weather and intimate settings where its drydown can fully develop. Its combination of familiar woody elements with a less common anise opening gives it a recognizable signature, and the tonka-vanilla base provides a smooth landing that feels comforting rather than challenging.
