The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Place de la Rêverie takes its name from a Parisian square where daydreaming becomes inevitable, where the city itself seems to encourage pausing. Nathalie Feisthauer created Santal de Paris as an homage to this particular quality of light, the way a late afternoon in the city can feel suspended outside ordinary time. The brief, if one imagines such things, was to translate that feeling of gentle warmth into liquid form, using materials that evoke both the golden hour and the soft intimacy of private spaces. Amyris, with its warm anise-tinged wood character, provides the initial luminosity, while the lily adds a delicate floral clarity that keeps the composition from becoming heavy.
The note selection reflects a deliberate philosophy: avoid predictable luxury materials in favor of those that feel discovered rather than obvious. Amyris often substitutes for sandalwood in compositions, but here it serves the opening, establishing warmth before sandalwood arrives in the drydown. The powdery heart allows the fragrance to feel intimate without heaviness. Vanilla and benzoin together create a sweet balsamic warmth that rewards close wearers more than those standing at arm's length.
The evolution
The fragrance begins with Amyris establishing immediate warmth, its woody-anise signature softened by lily's clean floral clarity. This opening phase lasts roughly fifteen minutes before the composition transitions into its heart. Powdery notes become dominant here, their talc-like softness paired with Ambrette's subtle musk. This middle phase carries the fragrance longest, its intimate projection creating a scent bubble rather than a scent trail. The drydown introduces the amber, benzoin, and vanilla sequence gradually, each material layering atop the lingering powdery warmth. Sandalwood arrives to fulfill the name's promise while Ambroxan extends the finale, its clean skin-like quality making the drydown feel like a second skin rather than perfume applied.
Cultural impact
Santal de Paris occupies a specific space in contemporary niche perfumery: a French artisanal approach to sandalwood, presented as an intimateExtrait rather than a bold statement fragrance. The powdery-vanilla-sandalwood triad appeals to those seeking something less obvious than mainstream options. Community feedback describes solid longevity and moderate sillage, positioning this as a fragrance for someone who wants to be remembered by those who get close, not announced to everyone in the room. It's the kind of scent that asks you to lean in.
