The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Cocktails & Catamarans arrived in 2022 from Scent Journey, a US-based niche fragrance house founded by perfumer Anthony Lane. The brand's vision, as described publicly, is making scent memories, the idea that a fragrance can return you to a specific moment, a specific coastline, a specific slant of afternoon light. Their Caribbean collections are built entirely around that kind of sensory time travel, and this one reads like a postcard from the most suspended hour of any trip. The name tells you exactly what you're getting. A catamaran cutting through flat turquoise water, the engine killed, a drink beading condensation against your palm. Nothing required of you except staying on the boat.
Lane went deep rather than the obvious route. He built a piña colada accord from the ground up, real pineapple and coconut woven together with intention, then wrapped the whole thing in aldehydes for lift and a bergamot blend for sparkle. The aldehyde treatment is what separates this from anything that leans too heavy on the coconut. It adds a cold fizzy edge to the fruit, like bubbles rising in a glass rather than a still pour. You get the sweetness of the drink but also the carbonation, the bright snap of something freshly poured. The melon note takes on the supporting role quietly.
The evolution
The first twenty minutes are a show. Grapefruit and blood orange hit hard, almost fizzy, with aldehydes throwing light across the whole opening like sun on chop. Green apple adds a tart snap underneath. It reads cold and sharp, nothing lazy about it, more like the first sip of something cold than any lazy beach cliché. Then the piña colada arrives, and the temperature shifts. The citrus pulls back but doesn't disappear entirely, it just moves into the edges while sweet pineapple and coconut fill the center. Melon rounds the heart out into something fuller. Lavender turns out to be the quiet surprise, a green thread that keeps the sweetness from sliding into syrup territory. White florals hover somewhere just above the skin, present but never loud. By hour two the base settles in: tonka bean warmth, amber, cedar, and ambroxan holding everything together with a quiet gravity.
Cultural impact
Scent Journey's Caribbean collection, including Cocktails & Catamarans alongside Siesta Sunset and Caribbean Casanova, was built around a specific appeal: wearing the vacation rather than waiting for it. It's the idea of a place you can put on, not just visit on a rare week off. The collection reads as a complete portrait of the region through scent. Cocktails & Catamarans captures the suspended hour on the water, Siesta Sunset leans into the longer golden-hour stretch, and Caribbean Casanova brings a different mood altogether.
