The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Coïncidence began with a question Arthur K couldn't stop asking: what if the right meeting almost didn't happen? The French film Hasards ou coïncidences planted the seed, a meditation on the accidents and intentions that bring two people into the same room at the same moment. Arthur K, founder of Scène Fragrance, wanted to capture that fragility. The beautiful souls who found each other, Romeo and Juliet, Verlaine and Rimbaud, Kahlo and Rivera, all hinged on a single decision made or missed. Coïncidence is the olfactory equivalent of that narrow margin. Patrice Revillard built it as an encounter in miniature: two strangers, warmth already happening, a door still open.
What makes Coïncidence work is its unexpected softness. Rum opens sharp and bright, but it doesn't announce itself as rum for long. Saffron adds warmth without the medicinal edge it can carry in other compositions. The real structure sits in the heart: suede, frankincense, cedarwood. Longan berries, tropical, faintly sweet, appear here too, a nod to the fruit-forward accord that sets this leather apart from heavier interpretations. On skin, reviewers note the leather arrives first and stays. On paper, the fruit leads. That's the coincidence built into the fragrance itself: different surfaces, different stories, one bottle.
The evolution
The opening arrives confident. Rum and saffron blend into something almost effervescent, that alcohol warmth, yes, but cut with bitter orange so it reads as bright rather than heavy. Thirty minutes in, the handoff begins. The citrus retreats, and what's left is suede warming against skin. Incense threads through, not smoky, not churchy, just a quiet depth. Cedarwood adds structure without sharpness. The leather stays present throughout, but it's worn leather, soft leather, the kind that doesn't demand attention. By hour three, the amber and sandalwood take over. The musk becomes more apparent, animalic without being aggressive, warm without being sweet. The sandalwood keeps it grounded. By hour six, you're left with something intimate and close. Not projection, but presence. The kind of scent someone notices when they're standing next to you, not across the room.
Cultural impact
Coïncidence arrived at a moment when the niche fragrance market was flooded with loud, performative compositions. Scène Fragrance, founded by artist Arthur K, positioned the house as anti-establishment from the start. The 2022 release of Coïncidence coincided with a broader cultural shift toward quieter luxury and understated personal expression. The fragrance's emphasis on texture over projection reflects changing attitudes about scent as personal rather than performative. Its success demonstrated that there's an audience for fragrances that ask something of the wearer rather than simply announcing themselves.
