The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Estelar. The name was the brief. A fragrance that takes cosmic scale and translates it into something you can wear on skin. Released in 2022, Estelar entered a catalog that already included Graal, Vanille Noir, and Overpower. The composition pairs star anise and Bulgarian tobacco, two materials that might seem incompatible at first glance but find unexpected harmony in the blend. It's a structural approach that asks how contrasting elements can coexist in a single fragrance, and the answer unfolds across the scent's development. This is a house that works with oppositions, finding tension between sweet and smoky, bright and dark, familiar and strange. Estelar is the latest evidence of that tendency.
What makes Estelar unusual is the accord structure. Star anise carries a natural black licorice note that most perfumers use sparingly as a supporting character, here it opens the composition as a prominent element. Paired with the tart brightness of blackcurrant and the sharp citrus of Sicilian bergamot, it creates an opening that feels simultaneously sweet, tart, and aniseedy. Cashmere wood and Bulgarian tobacco bridge the gap between this bright opening and the warm, resinous drydown, providing connective texture as the fragrance develops.
The evolution
The opening hits bright and tart, blackcurrant and citrus flash across the skin, then the star anise arrives. That black licorice note is the signature and it announces itself immediately. Pink pepper softens the blow just enough to keep it from feeling harsh. Cashmere wood and cedar become more present in the heart, wrapping everything in a plush, powdery warmth. The iris adds a delicate softness that balances the earlier spice. The drydown is where Estelar reveals its deeper character, Bulgarian tobacco and caramel create a warm, addictive sweetness, while oud and patchouli ground the composition in dark, earthy resin. Amber and ambroxan keep the sillage close and intimate, skin-present. This is a fragrance that lasts but doesn't project, you have to lean in to find it.
Cultural impact
Estelar arrived in 2022 as part of Sapientiae Niche's catalog, entering a period when many niche fragrances favored heavy oud, saffron, and vanilla constructions. The launch offered an alternative approach, choosing restraint and intimacy over projection and presence. This anise-forward oriental occupied territory that mainstream and niche houses had largely abandoned, making it stand apart from the saturated market of clone fragrances and safe releases. The house's approach to composition positioned Estelar as a counterpoint to compositions with louder, sweeter profiles.
