The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
The Palindrome series began with a simple idea: fragrance as mirror. A word that reads identically forward and backward, each letter earning its place on both sides. Palindrome II takes that structure literally, a composition that opens with the same bright citrus intent as its predecessor but arrives at an entirely different destination. Created in 2017 by Rodrigo Flores-Roux, the fragrance draws inspiration from the disco era, translating that cultural moment into something you can wear. The fragrance references the seventies and eighties, bringing forward their confidence into a contemporary context where leather and smoke still carry weight.
The note list runs long, but the structure isn't cluttered. It's layered with intention. Bergamot opens sharp, a calculated citrus presence that establishes immediate impact. Ginger and cardamom follow within minutes, building warmth without sweetness. The real architecture emerges in the heart: leather and osmanthus occupy the same space, neither retreating. Castoreum anchors them both, animalic, growly, honest. Labdanum and patchouli provide the balsamic foundation that prevents the composition from tipping into pure aggression.
The evolution
At spray, bergamot and ginger arrive together, a bright-spice collision that catches attention before intent registers. Soon after, the bergamot begins to shift, while cardamom and white pepper establish a warm, aromatic foundation. The leather announces itself not polished, but growly, the kind that belongs to someone who actually lives in their jacket. Osmanthus adds a bruised-floral quality at the edges, keeping the heart from reading too masculine despite its structure. By the later stages, vanilla wraps around the remaining leather and castoreum, creating a warm, intimate trail that stays close to skin but refuses to fully disappear. The drydown offers above-average longevity, warm and resinous, close to the skin but unmistakable. The next morning, a faint trace remains on fabric, smoky and balsamic, worth finding.
Cultural impact
Palindrome II occupies a specific position in contemporary niche perfumery: a fragrance that engages with past eras without slipping into mere imitation. The series draws inspiration from the disco era, translating that cultural energy into a structure that reads as both contemporary and rooted. The result is a scent bold enough to establish presence yet warm enough to sustain intimacy. Its unusual balance speaks to intentional composition, where each note earns its place rather than simply filling space.
