The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Named after the elegant seaside resort of Punta Ala on Italy's Tuscan coast, the fragrance seeks to bottle the region's breezy luxury. In 2018, Ferragamo enlisted veteran perfumer Alberto Morillas to translate the cliff-side sunrise into scent. Morillas built the opening around bright bergamot, mandarin, and lemon for immediate Mediterranean brightness, anchoring the composition in classic Italian perfumery traditions that date back decades.
Morillas constructed this evolution to suggest actual landscape rather than abstract water or beach smells. The bergamot recalls lemon groves above coastal cliffs. The olive embodies the green quality when crushed in the hills overlooking the sea. Patchouli grounds the drydown as an Italian constant. Jasmine appears at strategic moments, the way it does in Ligurian gardens where perfumers source high-quality absolute. Morillas demonstrates restraint with each ingredient, letting neroli rather than rosemary define the Mediterranean character. The composition culminates in a wearability-focused structure suitable for coastal occasions.
The evolution
The opening hits immediately with bergamot and mandarin orange, their citrus brightness establishing the coastal setting within seconds. Lemon sharpens the initial impression while neroli softens it with unexpected sophistication, creating a coastal sparkle that reads as Mediterranean without being literal. This refined opening provides a sunlit entrance before the heart develops. The heart shifts toward grounded florality, where olive delivers a genuine Mediterranean herbaceous quality echoing the air of Tuscan hillside groves. Jasmine adds classic elegance without indolic intensity, keeping the florals restrained and sophisticated. The drydown abandons traditional beach-scent tropes. Cedarwood provides warm woody richness while musk keeps things intimate and close to the skin. Vetiver adds earthy nuance and patchouli contributes depth that grounds the fragrance as evening approaches.
Cultural impact
Since its 2018 debut, Punta Ala has become a quiet favorite among Ferragamo’s unisex line, praised for its ability to bridge the brand’s classic Italian elegance with a breezy, modern Mediterranean vibe. Wearers often note its suitability for both daytime and relaxed evening settings, positioning it as a versatile staple in the house’s Tuscan Creations collection. Its fresh‑aquatic character sets it apart from the more gourmand or leather‑focused releases that followed, reinforcing Ferragamo’s reputation for balanced, timeless compositions.
