The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Delphine Lebeau-Krowiakj created Zazou in 2015 as part of Sabé Masson's skincare fragrance collection, a house that treats scent as something to live with, not just wear. With Zazou, the perfumer captured an energy that is sharp and alive, citrus-led, confident without being loud. The composition opens with a bright burst of citron, grapefruit, and lemon that feels immediate and clean, with a tartness that awakens the senses. As the top notes settle, they reveal a more layered heart where green cypress and warm ginger keep the freshness grounded, while creamy neroli and orange blossom add depth that prevents the fragrance from ever feeling one-dimensional.
What makes Zazou structurally interesting is how the orange blossom doesn't simply float at the heart; it arrives alongside cypress and ginger, a combination that keeps things green, slightly spicy, and rooted. The neroli and orange blossom arrive together, adding a creamy, slightly soapy floral note that bridges the sharp opening and the woody base. Meanwhile, the grapefruit adds a bitter edge that prevents the composition from ever becoming precious. It's a citrus fragrance that wears its sharpness with intention, finding balance through contrast rather than sweetness.
The evolution
Zazou opens with a triple citrus blast, citron, grapefruit, and lemon, that hits bright and tart, almost astringent. Think of the smell of citrus peel when you first zest an orange: immediate, clean, with a slight bitterness that lemon and grapefruit amplify. As the opening evolves, the citrus softens, becoming less astringent as the cypress and ginger arrive. The cypress adds a green, slightly turpentine quality that keeps things grounded, while the ginger brings a clean, warm heat that prevents the composition from going flat. The neroli and orange blossom arrive together, adding a creamy, slightly soapy floral note that bridges the sharp opening and the woody base. By the time the drydown arrives, the citrus has receded significantly, leaving behind the cedar and amber.
Cultural impact
Zazou occupies a particular space in the citrus fragrance landscape, offering something quieter and more considered than typical fresh colognes. It appeals to the wearer who treats fragrance as part of daily self-care rather than a statement. The Sabé Masson approach of treating fragrance as skincare attracts consumers who want their scent to complement their routine, working alongside their body rather than standing apart from it.
