The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Ralph Lauren launched Polo Cologne Intense in 2021 as a modern reinvention of the 1978 classic. The house tasked perfumers Pascal Gaurin and Carlos Benaïm with reimagining the green-fresh archetype that defined the original. The result is a fragrance that feels familiar without being a retread. It's the same identity, pushed further into sharper territory. The green-fresh structure carries through, but the edges are more defined, the presence more assertive. The perfumers worked within the established framework while finding new ways to deepen its character, creating a scent that honors its heritage while speaking to the present moment.
The key to this fragrance's appeal lies in the base: ambroxan, vetiver, and patchouli. Ambroxan is a synthetic ambergris molecule that mimics the warmth and saltiness of natural ambergris without the ethical complications or cost. It extends longevity significantly and adds a subtle marine warmth to the drydown. Vetiver brings its own complexity, earthy, smoky, with a mineral edge, that deepens the woody base when combined with patchouli. This trio creates a foundation that's more interesting than the typical woody base, and it keeps the green character present throughout the wear rather than letting it fade into abstraction.
The evolution
The opening hits sharp and immediate. Basil and mint arrive together, with grapefruit adding a citrus bite that doesn't sweeten. It's crisp at the start, almost astringent. Then the heart opens up. Clary sage brings a soft, herbaceous quality that smooths the sharpness. Violet leaf absolute adds a green, slightly dewy note that feels like crushed leaves. The transition is seamless, the citrus fades naturally while the herbal character deepens. By the second hour, the base takes over. Ambroxan provides a warm, slightly salty amber that carries the next several hours. Vetiver and patchouli add earthy depth, with patchouli bringing its characteristic dark, slightly sweet earthiness. The drydown is where this fragrance earns its name. It's not a linear scent, it evolves. The green character never fully disappears, threading through the base like a memory of the opening.
Cultural impact
Polo Cologne Intense offers a modern take on a classic. The green-fresh character appeals to those who appreciate the original and newcomers who want that heritage without wearing a vintage fragrance. It's a refinement of the wheel rather than a reinvention, staying true to the identity that made the line famous while adding contemporary depth and intensity.
