The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Part of the PACOLLECTION, six fragrances, each named "Me", each a different facet of identity. Crazy Me was built around an unexpected collision: wasabi's sharp, almost electric greenness against mimosa's velvety warmth. Alienor Massenet made a bet on tension rather than harmony. The result announces itself immediately, then softens into something close and warm. It's not trying to please everyone. It's trying to be itself.
Wasabi as a top note is rare for a reason, it's difficult to balance. Too much and it screams synthetic kitchen; too little and it disappears. Massenet found the middle ground: that first hit of green heat arrives sharp and bright, lasting just long enough to establish character, then yielding to mimosa's creamy, powdery heart. Sandalwood and spices anchor the drydown, keeping everything warm and close to the skin. The architecture is unconventional, but it works.
The evolution
The opening is immediate: wasabi's green intensity hits like a flash of brightness. No hesitation. For the first fifteen minutes, that's all there is, sharp, bright, almost synthetic in its clarity. Then the mimosa arrives. Creamy. Powdery. Warm. The green doesn't disappear, but it softens, becoming part of the composition rather than its headline. Sandalwood and warm spices settle in around the two-hour mark, wrapping everything in woody warmth that stays close to the skin. The drydown is intimate, lingering for hours without ever becoming heavy.
Cultural impact
Crazy Me arrived in 2019 as part of Rabanne's PACOLLECTION, a bold move into conceptual niche territory from a house better known for accessible designer scents. The wasabi note was a calculated provocation, designed to spark conversation and test whether fragrance audiences would embrace a culinary ingredient typically associated with sushi bars. This approach mirrored a broader trend in perfumery toward unexpected, almost confrontational materials, but Rabanne's execution felt distinctly commercial in its ambition. The PACOLLECTION's six fragrances explored identity through scent, with Crazy Me specifically targeting the intersection of sharpness and softness, green and warm, synthetic and natural.
