The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Parfums Ciro first opened its doors on Manhattan's Fifth Avenue in 1921, building a reputation for scent narratives rooted in theatricality and transformation. When the house announced its 2018 revival after a half-century silence, the return of an identity-driven house carried weight. Maskee became the revival's centerpiece, with perfumer Alexander Streeck tasked to translate the concept of masks and hidden selves into olfactory form.
The choice of notes in Maskee reflects deliberate duality. Ylang-Ylang and Iris are rarely paired without intention, one lush and tropical, the other cool and textured. Their combination in the opening creates contradictory sensations that feel both revealed and concealed. The Jasmine and Heliotrope pairing in the heart provides soft comfort without overwhelming sweetness, while the honey, white musk, cedarwood, and bourbon vanilla base anchors everything in intimate warmth. This is not a fragrance that shouts in a room. It reveals itself slowly, rewarding those who lean in close.
The evolution
The dramatic arc of Maskee mirrors the act of masking itself. The opening, with its Ylang-Ylang and Rose, serves as the brightly lit stage curtain. Iris adds immediate depth, its powdery root-like dryness suggesting that something lies beneath the surface brightness. As the heart develops over the first hour, Jasmine and Heliotrope emerge as the true face beneath the mask, warmer and more intimate than the initial bloom. Tonka Bean acts as a bridge, its sweetness connection the bright opening to the darker drydown. The honey in the drydown reintroduces ambered warmth before Cedarwood strips back to something more essential, culminating finally in the intimate, skin-close whisper of Bourbon Vanilla.
Cultural impact
Since its 2018 debut, Maskee has been praised for its unisex appeal, drawing both women and men to its powdery‑sweet aura. Wearers often note its elegant balance between bright florals and warm gourmand, positioning it alongside niche classics like Chanel Beige (2015) and Tom Ford Velvet Orchid (2014). Its strong sillage and moderate longevity make it a favorite for evening gatherings and creative workspaces alike.
