The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Blanc de Chine translates to 'white of China'. Patrice Revillard built this fragrance around the interplay of osmanthus, jasmine, and orange blossom. The opening presents osmanthus with its distinct apricot-like sweetness, which then opens into a rich floral heart where jasmine and orange blossom interweave. The composition unfolds gracefully on skin, with the white florals remaining luminous and present throughout the wear. The dry down reveals subtle green facets from the floral accord, maintaining the fragrance's delicate character from first application to final moments.
What makes Blanc de Chine unusual is how the osmanthus performs. The flower brings a distinctive apricot-like sweetness that evolves as the fragrance develops. The sage acts as a quiet counterweight, keeping the floral density from becoming overwhelming. In the base, opoponax and styrax add a smoky-resinous dimension. The fragrance moves through distinct phases, with the top notes presenting the osmanthus upfront before transitioning into a deeper, more complex dry down that reveals the resinous undertones.
The evolution
The opening arrives soft, osmanthus and sage arriving together, the sage lending an herbal green edge that prevents the floral from reading as sweet at first. Within minutes, jasmine and ylang-ylang expand the composition into something tropical, warm, and undeniably floral. The orange blossom threads through, adding a bitter Neroli-like brightness that keeps the heart from becoming heavy. By the second hour, the base takes over. Benzoin brings its creamy, vanillic warmth. Sandalwood smooths everything into a skin-close warmth that lingers for hours. The opoponax and styrax add a quiet resinous depth, not smoky exactly, but a presence that stays intimate and close.
Cultural impact
Blanc de Chine, meaning 'white of China,' takes its name from the revered Chinese porcelain tradition. The fragrance captures the essence of white florals through osmanthus, jasmine, and orange blossom, materials cherished in perfumery for their radiant character. Osmanthus brings a distinctive apricot-like sweetness that distinguishes this composition. The perfumer pairs this with sage, adding a green, herbal dimension that creates an interesting contrast with the floral elements.
