The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Oud Elite launched in Riyadh in 2007 with a focus on Arabian oud expressions. After the success of Nero in 2010, the house sought a third fragrance that could bridge its raw agarwood heritage with a brighter aromatic character. Masha'er arrived in 2013 as that bridge, using basil, star anise, and frankincense in the opening to introduce a green and spicy dimension that distinguished it from the brand's earlier darker compositions. The perfumer structured the heart around vanilla and rose to offer softness and warmth while cashmere wood added a modern textural element. Oud anchors the base, preserving the brand's identity even as the overall tone shifted toward approachability.
Masha'er was designed to demonstrate that oud can coexist with fresher, more aromatic elements without losing its identity. The opening combination of basil, star anise, and frankincense was chosen specifically for their ability to lift the composition while maintaining a sense of warmth. Frankincense serves as the connective tissue between the bright top and the deeper base, its smoky quality bridging the aromatic beginning with the oud-driven finish. The heart uses vanilla and rose to provide softness, with cashmere wood adding a modern textural layer that keeps the floral notes from reading as traditional.
The evolution
The fragrance moves through clear phases that reflect its layered construction. The opening takes the wearer through basil and star anise, with frankincense providing a resinous counterweight that keeps the green and spice from becoming too sharp. As time passes, the heart unfolds with vanilla taking the lead, its sweetness tempered by rose and supported by cashmere wood. The transition feels intentional rather than abrupt, each note arriving before the previous fully fades. By the time the drydown arrives, oud takes command, its dark wood character working alongside amber and musk to create a finish that feels both warm and clean. The arc traces a path from brightness to depth, honoring the house's commitment to oud while embracing a more aromatic middle ground.
Cultural impact
Since its 2013 debut, Masha'er has become a staple in Gulf perfume circles, praised for marrying spicy herbaceousness with a sweet vanilla heart. Its strong sillage and ten‑hour longevity make it a go‑to for evening gatherings, while the balanced oud base earns nods from both traditional oud lovers and newer fragrance enthusiasts seeking a refined, yet approachable, oriental scent.
