The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Sol joins Oscar London's Nota Paris Collection, the musical sequence that began with Do, Re, Mi, and now arrives at Sol. The name is the concept: the sun, the source, the warmth that turns everything it touches to gold. Bergamot opens bright as a morning without clouds. Incense settles beneath it like smoke from a brazier in an open courtyard. Then leather, then suede, then amber, the materials of warmth, of surfaces that hold heat long after the light moves on. This is a fragrance about light translation: how sunlight feels on skin, on stone, on the back of a hand lifted against a late afternoon sky.
The structure of Sol follows a classic oriental trajectory but refuses to rush. Bergamot keeps the opening from heaviness, a brief, clean brightness before the incense deepens everything. Cedar leaves bridge the gap between citrus and wood, adding an herbal edge that keeps the smoke honest. Cypriol, used sparingly, brings a tar-like intensity that evokes old theatrical curtains. Iris powdery and cool keeps the heart from becoming too warm. White musk in the base ensures the drydown stays clean rather than sticky. Each layer has a reason to be there. Each one earns its place.
The evolution
The first hour belongs to bergamot and incense. They arrive together, bright smoke that feels both sacred and approachable. The cedar leaves appear gradually, adding an herbal undertone that prevents either the citrus or the smoke from taking full control. By hour three, leather becomes more present, suede softening it, patchouli grounding it, the bergamot finally conceding to deeper notes. The base arrives around hour four: amber warmth, labdanum resin, white musk keeping everything clean. This is where Sol earns its name. The drydown is sun-warm. It lingers on skin and on fabric long after the wearer has forgotten they applied it. Eight to ten hours, depending on skin. Strong sillage, a little goes further than expected.
Cultural impact
Sol sits at the warmer end of Oscar London's Nota Paris Collection, the musical sequence that includes Mi and the other notes. Where Mi leans cool and airy, Sol leans warm and theatrical. It's not the most accessible fragrance in the range, but for those who appreciate oriental compositions with presence, it's a quiet standout. The brand's emphasis on natural extracts and high concentration gives Sol a quality that doesn't rely on sillage bombs or synthetic amplification.
