The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Oriflame, founded in Stockholm in 1967, built its identity on approachable beauty with Swedish design sensibility. In 2017, the brand turned its community-driven ethos toward exploring duality through fragrance. French-trained perfumer Sophie Labbe was brought in to capture something specific: a bright first impression that gradually reveals something richer underneath. The name, The One Disguise, suggests exactly this concept of layered identity. Labbe approached the brief by building a top that commands immediate attention, then constructing a heart that shifts the narrative, and finally a base that feels like a genuine confession rather than a performance.
The note progression in The One Disguise follows a philosophy of transformation. The opening, dominated by mandarin and rhubarb, functions as the mask: bright, attention-grabbing, and energetic. The heart of raspberry and tuberose begins the reveal, showing sweetness and richness that hint at something beneath the surface. The base of patchouli, tonka bean and vanilla completes the transformation, demonstrating that the fragrance is fundamentally warm and grounded rather than merely playful. The pairing of tonka bean and vanilla creates a familiar comfort while patchouli ensures the drydown maintains enough complexity to reward close attention.
The evolution
The fragrance begins with mandarin orange and rhubarb, a combination that delivers immediate impact. The mandarin provides recognizable citrus sweetness while the rhubarb adds an unexpected tartness that keeps the opening from feeling predictable. Rose, though not the loudest note, prevents the top from becoming too sharp or one-dimensional. As the initial brightness settles, raspberry steps forward in the heart, bringing a jammy, fruity sweetness that feels like a natural evolution rather than a jarring shift. Tuberose then weaves through, its creamy character adding body and a touch of tropical lushness. Violet provides a powdery counterpoint, ensuring the heart stays balanced. The drydown marks the true reveal: patchouli introduces earthy depth that grounds everything that came before, while tonka bean and vanilla combine to create a warm, lingering sweetness. This is where the disguise falls away and the fragrance shows its true character.
Cultural impact
Since its 2017 debut, The One Disguise has become a favorite among fans who enjoy a sweet‑floral scent that feels both youthful and sophisticated, often mentioned alongside Oriflame’s other fruit‑focused releases as a go‑to everyday perfume. Its popularity has grown steadily, influencing seasonal marketing campaigns and inspiring fan‑created scent pairings that highlight its versatile character across diverse cultural contexts.
