The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
I.D. Player arrived in 2013 as the third men's scent in Oriflame's I.D. line, a collection built to give everyday shoppers a touch of intrigue. Drawing on the brand's Swedish roots, the perfumer blended cognac's amber warmth with star anise's sharp spice and the exotic wood of cabreuva, aiming for a fresh take on masculine warmth. The lineup offered distinct personalities at accessible price points, with I.D. Player standing out for its unapologetic boldness.
The note philosophy here prioritizes warmth above all else. Cognac and vanilla bookend the experience, with coffee bridging the transition and star anise adding that necessary spark to keep things from going flat. Cabreuva wood serves as a bridge between the boozy opening and the sweet drydown, creating continuity rather than a jarring shift. The pairing of orange blossom with jasmine in the heart is strategic, keeping the floral aspect subtle enough to stay masculine while adding complexity that pure coffee alone would lack.
The evolution
The fragrance moves from a warm, boozy opening anchored by cognac and sharpened by star anise into a richer, more complex heart where coffee dominates. The transition feels natural rather than jarring, with orange blossom softening the transition and jasmine adding a creamy counterweight to coffee's bitterness. By the time vanilla arrives in the drydown, the journey has shifted from bright spice to cozy warmth, patchouli keeping things grounded and musk providing clean longevity.
Cultural impact
The blend of cognac, star anise, and cabreuva wood taps into a rich blend of regional traditions. Cognac evokes the historic French spirit of celebration, while star anise brings an Asian spice heritage that has been used in ceremonial teas for centuries. Cabreuva wood, sourced from South American forests, adds an earthy grounding note that recalls indigenous rituals of scent and memory. Tog ether, these ingredients create a cross‑cultural dialogue, inviting wearers to reflect on shared moments of hospitality, storytelling, and the timeless practice of marking special occasions with fragrance.
