The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Devenir translates from the French as "to become," and the word does the heavy lifting here. This is a fragrance about transformation without spectacle, about how a day starts one thing and ends another. The concept was handed to Bertrand Duchaufour, a perfumer known for compositions that prefer suggestion over statement. Released in 2024, Devenir sits alongside the brand's other releases, including Fleur de Bonbon and Printemps, each one a separate chapter in a larger story the house is telling. Created in France and made in Korea, the house bridges two traditions under a single olfactory roof, drawing on French creative development while producing in its home market.
Duchaufour's approach here is worth noting for what it leaves out. There's no vanilla cushioning the base, no oud flexing for recognition. Instead, the structure leans on petitgrain and jasmine tea, a pairing that shifts the composition between cologne brightness and something more contemplative. The nutmeg arrives not as baking warmth but as a dry, almost peppery flicker that keeps the citrus honest. Violet in the base gives the cedarwood a powdery softness without tipping into old-fashioned territory.
The evolution
The opening belongs to the citrus. Bergamot, lemon, and lime arrive almost simultaneously, with rosemary threading through like a sharp needle pulling the whole opening taut. It's bracing, clean, the kind of introduction that could wake someone up on a summer morning. As the composition settles, petitgrain absorbs most of the brightness and the jasmine tea makes its entrance, not as a floral statement but as an atmospheric layer, like steam rising from a cup left on a windowsill. Cardamom and nutmeg warm the edges without making the heart heavy, both spices adding texture rather than sweetness. Eventually, the composition turns inward. The violet appears quietly, giving the cedarwood a dusty softness, and the musk settles in close to the skin, creating an intimate drydown that feels more personal than the bright opening suggested.
Cultural impact
Devenir arrived in 2024 as one of Organ Tale's early releases, a cologne that doesn't try to be anything other than a cologne, executed with the precision of a house that wants to be taken seriously on its own terms. There's nothing decorative about the composition, nothing added for show. The restraint reads as confidence rather than minimalism for its own sake. In a market crowded with fragrances trying to announce themselves through projection and sweetness, a composition this quiet feels almost radical. It assumes the wearer doesn't need to be convinced.
