The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Thymus takes its name from the herb itself, the plant that inspired the Scottish and Irish folk song "Wild Mountain Thyme." For perfumer Aistis Mickevičius, the challenge was to translate that character into a wearable fragrance. Thyme carries a distinctive camphorated sharpness, a green austerity that can easily tip toward harshness in the wrong composition. In Thymus, the herb maintains its upright, wild quality, expressed with clarity and precision. Olfactive Pharmacy approaches formulation with discipline, and Thymus reflects that careful balance applied to an ingredient that demands respect and understanding.
The structure here breaks from convention: herbs typically appear only in supporting roles, tucked into drydowns or used as subtle accents. Thymus puts thyme front and center from the first spray, supported by yuzu and bergamot rather than softened by them. The citrus creates a bright counterpoint that allows the herb's character to read clearly. Jasmine and neroli in the heart add waxy, bright floral notes that provide balance without dulling the herb's edge.
The evolution
The opening announces itself without apology. Yuzu and bergamot arrive together, the citrus bright and immediate. The spice trio of white pepper, juniper, and allspice joins in, adding a clean, sharp edge that cuts through any sweetness before it can form. Then the thyme arrives and takes over, green, camphorated, unmistakably herbal. Jasmine and neroli soften the middle register, adding a waxy floral dimension that prevents the composition from becoming one-note. The neroli brings a honeyed brightness that lifts the thyme without domesticating it. The base takes over as the heart notes fade: pine and amber form a warm, clean drydown, with labdanum and vetiver adding resinous depth. White musk keeps everything close to skin, lingering subtly on fabric as the green and woody character of the original herb persists in its final traces.
Cultural impact
The Olfactive Pharmacy house was founded by pharmacists Oliver and Holger Dubben in Cologne in 2020, bringing a precise, focused sensibility to fragrance creation. Their background informs a careful approach to how materials are evaluated and combined, emphasizing what each ingredient actually contributes rather than relying on conventional associations or expected characterizations. This methodical perspective shapes the brand's output, including Thymus, where the goal is to honor the actual qualities of the herb in wearable form.
