The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Ocean of Gold arrived in 2023 as Oakcha's newest entry in its Oud Collection, aiming to celebrate the precious oud ingredient with a luxurious yet accessible twist. The house, rooted in New York's affordable-luxury niche, wanted a scent that felt opulent and deep, echoing the richness of gold-colored resin and the warmth of precious spices. The perfumer chose to build around oud as the anchor but balanced it with approachable florals and sweet resins, creating a fragrance that honors oud's complexity without intimidating newcomers.
The note selection reflects a philosophy of contrast and balance. The opening spices, while warm, stay bright thanks to cardamom's citrusy edge. Rose bridges the gap between spice and wood, its softness tempering the assertiveness of clove and saffron. Oud takes its rightful place in the base, but the perfumer refuses to let it dominate, softening its edges with vanilla and musk. This approach makes Ocean of Gold versatile enough for evening wear yet refined enough for cooler daytime occasions, with the drydown notes working tog ether to create something that feels both luxurious and wearable.
The evolution
The fragrance opens with a bold trio of cardamom, clove, and saffron that immediately signals opulence and warmth. This spiced introduction feels almost edible, like walking into a spice merchant's shop filled with exotic wares. As the minutes pass, rose emerges softly from the cardamom's green brightness, joined by sandalwood's creamy milk and thyme's herbaceous whisper. The transition feels natural, the florals tempering the initial spice without dulling it. By the time the drydown arrives, oud has claimed its throne, supported by vanilla's sweetness and amber's resinous glow. Cedarwood provides structure while musk keeps everything Intimate and skin-close, creating a finish that lingers long after the initial application.
Cultural impact
The blend of cardamom, clove, and saffron in Ocean of Gold draws on centuries‑old spice routes that connected distant cultures, symbolizing trade, exchange, and shared heritage. By incorporating these ingredients, the fragrance honors the historic journeys of merchants who carried these aromas across continents, embedding stories of hospitality and celebration into modern perfume culture. It serves as a reminder of how scent can bridge past and present, fostering appreciation for the diverse traditions that shape contemporary olfactory art.
