The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Leslie Gauthier built Egeo Cogu around a single unconventional decision: putting Boletus edulis at the center of a fruity-gourmand composition. The 2025 release is the world's first fragrance to feature the mushroom accord, sourced from Chinese Boletus edulis and inspired by the gastronomic universe. Boletus edulis brings an unexpected savory dimension to the composition, creating a bridge between the fruity and gourmand elements that might otherwise feel disconnected. The mushroom accord transforms what could be straightforward sweetness into something more complex, allowing the red fruits and caramel to resonate in new ways. Gauthier's approach elevated the familiar into something worth experiencing again.
What makes Boletus edulis unusual in perfumery is its savory quality. It doesn't smell like a forest floor or damp soil. In Egeo Cogu, the mushroom accord brings an earthy character that adds depth to the composition. The praline and jasmine in the heart soften the transition, keeping the earthiness from overwhelming the sweetness. This unusual note interacts with the surrounding elements in unexpected ways, creating a richer olfactory experience than a traditional fruity-gourmand fragrance would offer.
The evolution
The opening hits immediately. Caramel and blackberry arrive together, sweet and bright, with blackcurrant adding a slight tartness that prevents the whole thing from reading flat. Raspberry lingers in the background, keeping the top phase fruity for the first thirty minutes. Then the mushroom accord steps forward. It doesn't announce itself loudly. It arrives quietly alongside jasmine and freesia, shifting the fragrance's character. The praline follows, bringing nutty warmth that softens the transition. The base takes over gradually, with crème brûlée and sandalwood forming a warm, creamy drydown that settles close to the skin. The sandalwood keeps it grounded. The musk adds softness. This is where it earns its longevity. The drydown holds for several hours, intimate and warm, the kind of scent that lingers after you've stopped paying attention to it.
Cultural impact
The Boletus edulis mushroom accord gives Egeo Cogu a distinctive character that sets it apart from typical fruity-gourmand fragrances. It offers a unique combination of sweetness and unexpected depth, appealing to those who appreciate both warmth and complexity in their scents. This unusual pairing creates a fragrance that invites multiple wears, revealing different facets with each experience.
