The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
PROVENCE was born from Nissaba's quest to bottle the spirit of the Durance Valley's high‑altitude herb fields. The house travelled to Haute Provence, where lavender, clary sage and hyssop grow under a clear sky, and harvested the five iconic plants that define the region. Sébastien Cresp translated these botanicals into a fragrance that preserves their living character rather than reconstituting them as sweetness or powder. The collaboration between the house and the perfumer prioritized authenticity over spectacle, producing a fragrance that speaks as clearly as the landscape that inspired it.
Nissaba chose Sébastien Cresp precisely because he understood that Provencal herbs cannot be treated as raw material for a conventional fragrance structure. The house wanted a composition that smelled like the source, not a memory of it. Cresp organized the heart around lavender as the structural backbone, surrounding it with hyssop, clary sage and mint to capture the layered character of an actual herb field. Bergamot provides the only concession to conventional perfumery, offering a subtle citrus quality that prevents the herbs from feeling medicinal or austere. Black pepper, coriander and nutmeg are used sparingly, adding spice and warmth that complement the herbal core without overshadowing it.
The evolution
The journey of PROVENCE begins the moment it leaves the bottle. Lavender and hyssop arrive first, their green, slightly bitter quality establishing a fragrance that refuses to sweeten or soften. Mint follows quickly, introducing a cool dimension that keeps the herbs feeling fresh and well-ventilated, like stems pulled from the plant that morning. As the composition deepens, clary sage adds its warm, hay-like sweetness to the blend, preventing the overall effect from becoming one-dimensional. Bergamot brings a gentle citrus brightness to the heart, while black pepper and coriander introduce mild spice that adds structure without heat. Nutmeg provides a final soft warmth that allows the herb field to settle into a balanced, lingering presence on skin, one that feels continuous and natural rather than staged.
Cultural impact
Since its 2023 debut, PROVENCE has become a quiet favorite among fans of aromatic fougères, praised for its bold hyssop focus. Wearers note its ability to evoke Provençal fields without feeling clichéd, positioning it as a modern field‑note that bridges classic green freshness with a sophisticated spice edge.
