The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Collages Angelica launched in 2018 as part of Natura's Collages line, a series built around single botanical heroes rather than layered complexity. Verônica Kato composed the piece around angelica root, anchoring a composition that relies on the natural tension between citrus and green. She framed it with Brazilian mandarin on top for sweetness and lift, then grounded the whole thing in watery notes that blur the line between skin and river. The result reads more like a place than a perfume, somewhere between a garden after irrigation and the cool air that follows a tropical downpour. The mandarin here feels pulpy and alive rather than candy-like, carrying a slightly bitter rind character that keeps the sweetness honest.
What makes the composition unusual is its restraint. The watery base isn't trying to smell like seawater. It's trying to smell like the moment water touches warm earth, that brief second of steam and green. It's a more honest aquatic, one that respects the botanical source rather than simulating a laboratory ocean. The interplay between mandarin's citric brightness and the damp, almost mineral quality of angelica root gives the fragrance its character. There's nothing sharp or aggressive here, no single note announcing itself from across a room.
The evolution
The first moments belong to Brazilian mandarin, and it's a mandarin that doesn't shout. There's a sweet-tart quality, like biting into the fruit before the sugar fully arrives, bright and uncomplicated. Underneath the citrus, angelica begins to surface, not as a single note but as a feeling, a cool, slightly bitter greenness that recalls crushed stems and damp garden soil after rainfall. The transition into the heart phase is gentle, which is both the strength and the slight limitation of the composition. There's no dramatic shift, no surprise ingredient waiting in the wings. What changes is the texture. The mandarin recedes, and angelica takes the center, but it does so gently, like a conversation shifting from small talk to something more real.
Cultural impact
Collages Angelica sits within Natura's Collages series, a line that treats each fragrance as a study in a single botanical rather than a traditional complex composition. This approach reflects a broader interest in minimalist fragrance structures, where one ingredient takes center stage and supporting notes serve to frame it rather than compete with it. The Collages concept invites wearers to experience a plant material in depth, to understand its various facets through careful composition.
