The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Natura Siberica built its identity around the biodiversity of Siberia, a landscape of taiga forests, alpine meadows, and short growing seasons where plants develop concentrated aromatic compounds simply to survive. Safran de Sibérie was released in 2017, part of the brand's inaugural fragrance collection that included Siberie Mon Amour, Nuit En Siberie, and Danse du Shaman. The name points to the saffron plant's northernmost relatives and the rugged Siberian botanicals at the heart of the composition. The intent was to bottle something that captured the tension of that landscape: extreme cold, concentrated beauty, a floral intensity earned rather than cultivated.
The fragrance leans on a rose-peony axis that gives it an immediately recognizable floral character. What sets it apart is the vetiver, earthy, slightly mineral, carrying a green complexity that keeps the florals from going sweet. The pink pepper appears in the heart alongside jasmine, adding a soft spice that bridges the bright opening and the deeper base. Musk provides the powdery skin effect that makes this feel intimate rather than projecting. The combination of cypress and patchouli in the base gives it a cool, woody finish that echoes the Siberian forest without tipping into masculine territory.
The evolution
The opening hits bright and tart, bergamot foremost, with pink pepper lending a clean spice that cuts through the citrus. Within minutes the rose arrives, heavy and slightly sweet, supported by peony's softer floral weight. The handoff to the heart happens around the 15-minute mark as jasmine joins and the composition warms. Musk arrives quietly, shifting the texture from bright to powdery, like pressing your nose to warm skin rather than sniffing from a bottle. The drydown begins around the 90-minute mark, led by cypress bringing a cool, slightly camphorated woodiness. Patchouli settles underneath, earthy and grounding, eventually dominating the final hours as the florals fade into a quiet mineral-wood residual. On fabric, it can linger into the next day.
Cultural impact
Natura Siberica launched its fragrance collection in 2017, marking the brand's transition from skincare to perfumery using Siberian wild-harvested botanicals as a core differentiator. The brand positioned itself at the intersection of eco-conscious luxury and accessible pricing, appealing to consumers seeking natural alternatives within the mid-market segment. The collection included Safran de Sibérie alongside releases like Siberie Mon Amour and Nuit En Siberie, collectively establishing a new direction for the Russian beauty company in Western markets. By centering on botanical provenance from the Siberian wilderness, the brand differentiated itself from typical Western fragrance houses that rarely foreground Russian natural heritage as a luxury selling point.
