The beginning
Charmant arrived in 2022, a French-made composition from Moudon's White Label Collection. The name carries the idea: charming, the French charmant, meaning pleasant, engaging, the kind of person you turn toward in a room. The composition leans into that social energy, aromatic and spiced at the surface, then grounded by leather and amber once the initial brightness passes. Cypress and thyme give it a Mediterranean edge, not garden-party polite. Saffron adds a thread of warmth that keeps the coolness honest, and a raspberry twist pulls the opening into something fruitier, almost lifted, before the heavier notes settle in.
The interesting move here is the structural tension. Aromatic green notes (cypress, thyme) usually anchor masculine-leaning compositions. Raspberry and tea in the heart are unexpected choices that pull the scent toward something more fluid, more unisex. Then the base lands hard on leather, amber, and vanilla, the kind of warm, slightly sweet foundation that makes the green opening feel like a deliberate choice rather than an accident. The saffron is what ties it together. It bridges the herbal top and the resinous base, acting as the translator between two languages that don't usually share a sentence.
The evolution
The first 15 minutes are all green. Cypress and thyme arrive sharp, almost camphorous, the kind of opening that clears a room before the rest of the composition shows up. Saffron warms underneath, a slow ember rather than a burst. Raspberry surfaces around minute 20, sweet and slightly tart, softening the herbal edge without dulling it. By the 45-minute mark, jasmine and lily of the valley take over, a white floral lift that feels like the scent caught a breeze. Tea adds a dry, tannic quality here, almost like the air after someone steeps a cup nearby. Around hour two, the base announces itself. Leather arrives first, suede-soft rather than sharp. Amber and vanilla warm underneath, and vetiver grounds the whole composition with an earthy, slightly smoky edge. The drydown from hour four onward is warm, close to skin, a blend of amber, vanilla, and soft musk that lingers through the rest of the day. On fabric the next morning, the leather note is the last thing standing.
