The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Lumia arrives as a statement of intent from a French house. Where many brands reach for gender categories to anchor a fragrance, Lumia exists without such easy anchors, offering instead an olfactory world to inhabit. The name itself suggests light, translucence, something that radiates without force. That tension, luminosity and warmth, runs through the entire composition. Bergamot and raspberry open the story, bright and almost flirtatious, with the raspberry giving the bergamot something to land on beyond just citrus sharpness. Before the florals take over and the real work begins, the top notes establish a playful clarity that invites exploration of what comes next.
The double placement of ylang-ylang, both in the top and the heart, is the structural move that makes Lumia read differently than its accords might suggest. Here, it opens with the bergamot and raspberry, so the tropical warmth arrives immediately, not as a transition but as a character. By the time the heart settles in with jasmine and orange blossom, the ylang-ylang has already established the scent's register, layering its creamy floral character beneath the fruit notes rather than waiting to reveal itself.
The evolution
The bergamot-raspberry opening arrives fast, bright and almost tart, with the raspberry giving the bergamot something to land on beyond just citrus sharpness. That brightness asserts itself immediately and then begins to soften as the florals move in. Ylang-ylang enters the heart alongside jasmine and orange blossom, and the composition shifts from fruity-bright to floral-warm. This becomes the longest phase, a sustained period of powdery bloom against warm skin, the florals deepening and becoming more lush as they meld with the skin's warmth. The drydown is where papyrus earns its place. Not animalic, not smoky, but atmospheric in the way old books are atmospheric, the smell of something that has settled into fabric and skin over time. Amber and patchouli arrive quietly underneath, adding a subtle earthy-sweet warmth that complements the papyrus without competing with it.
Cultural impact
Lumia arrived in 2022 as part of Moudon's collection, presenting a fragrance that favors atmospheric, gender-neutral composition over traditional masculine or feminine categories. The scent emphasizes warm florals grounded by an unusual papyrus base, creating a sensory profile that prioritizes personal resonance and intimate presence rather than bold projection. Its amber-papyrus foundation captures a sensibility that appeals to those seeking something softer and more nuanced than conventional fragrance structures.
