The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
2010 marked ten years since Mexx Woman first arrived. First Sunshine Woman was the celebration, a limited-edition reimagining built on the original's structure but refracted through the lens of morning itself. Mandarin was added to bring juiciness, heliotrope to capture that threshold moment when night becomes day. White musk provided the warmth, the morning fog lifting as light takes hold. It was released in April 2010 as Mexx turned a decade old, built for someone who wanted to carry that first warmth of the day on her skin.
The composition takes Mexx Woman's floral-citrus DNA and warms it considerably. Where the original leaned bright, First Sunshine leans golden. Mandarin leads, not aggressively, but with the soft insistence of light through curtains. The Amalfi lemon adds a citrus edge that keeps things interesting. Blackcurrant appears as a quiet tartness, preventing the sweetness from cloying. As the opening settles, jasmine and rose emerge, white florals that add powdery softness without heaviness.
The evolution
The opening announces itself quickly, citrus brightness that reads as immediate and cheerful. Mandarin and lemon hit first, with blackcurrant providing a subtle tart undertone that keeps the sweetness honest. For the first thirty minutes, it's bright, clean, and refreshingly uncomplicated. Then the handoff begins. The citrus softens as jasmine and rose emerge, bringing powdery warmth that shifts the fragrance from morning cheer to something more intimate. Heliotrope becomes more noticeable in the heart, slightly nutty, almost almond-like, adding an interesting dimension that keeps the composition from reading as purely floral. This middle phase is held by the white florals and the quiet presence of lily of the valley. The drydown is where the sandalwood and white musk take over, creating a skin-close warmth.
Cultural impact
First Sunshine Woman arrived in 2010 as a counterpart to First Sunshine Man, reflecting Mexx's approach to marking milestones with limited editions tied to seasonal collections. The fragrance captures the brand's ethos of bright, approachable aromas that suit everyday wear. The heliotrope note gives it a distinctive warmth that sets it apart from the typical bright citrus flanker. Some wearers have noted similarities to SoCal by Hollister, suggesting a comparable positioning as a casual, easygoing everyday fragrance rather than a statement scent.
