What makes Shanaan work is the spacing. Incense and patchouli are heavy materials, they dominate easily, especially when paired with amber and labdanum. Petitgrain and lemon give the wearer a window of clarity before the smoke thickens. The cedar does the heavy lifting during the transition, holding the structure while the heart notes establish themselves. Labdanum is the underappreciated anchor here. It's resinous, slightly animalic, and it blends with the amber to create a base that feels warm without being sweet. Musk rounds the edges.

The evolution

The opening is brief but precise: petitgrain and lemon give a clean, almost soapy clarity that fades quickly. No drama. No wait. The citrus is the curtain, and it lifts quickly. Then the cedar steps in. Virginia cedar carries the next phase, dry, slightly pencil-shaving in its realism, with patchouli arriving soft and earthy underneath. The incense doesn't explode. It threads. A wispy, non-gothic smoke that layers into the cedar rather than competing with it. This is smoke as atmosphere, not smoke as statement. The drydown is where Shanaan earns its name. Labdanum and amber create a warm, resinous anchor that settles into the skin over hours. The musk keeps everything close, intimate, almost skin-like. On fabric, the cedar and incense last longest. On skin, the amber and labdanum dominate after the first two hours.
