The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Affecting Mind was created by perfumer Elise Bénat, who sought to capture what she describes as a feeling both hot and bright yet discreet. Working within the M.INT house, which blends Italian design sensibility with French perfumery rigor, Bénat prioritized restraint as a form of sophistication. The brief asked for something that would trigger personal memories rather than impress strangers, and the solution required threading warmth through every phase rather than relying on initial impact alone.
The philosophy behind Affecting Mind treats sesame and hazelnut as a through-line, appearing in different forms across the fragrance's lifecycle rather than vanishing after the opening. Benin selected these notes specifically because they carry memory-rich associations, foods that evoke specific moments for most people. The drydown's suede note was chosen to feel physical rather than abstract, a texture you can almost sense against skin. Cedarwood and vetiver anchor the heart to wood without introducing any sweetness, keeping the composition dry and sophisticated. This is a fragrance designed for the wearer who understands that presence and projection are different qualities.
The evolution
The fragrance begins with sesame, cardamom, and ginger where the sesame provides a toasted, almost bready quality that differentiates this from typical citrus-led openings. Ginger brings heat while cardamom adds a floral-spicy layer that elevates the combination beyond simple spice. As the top notes dissipate, hazelnut transitions into the heart alongside vetiver and cedarwood, with the hazelnut providing a roasted nuttiness that bridges the bright opening and the woody heart. Vetiver contributes its characteristic smoky-earthiness while cedarwood supplies clean, dry wood. The drydown brings suede, amber, and musk where suede creates a tactile, leather-adjacent texture, amber provides a resinous warmth, and musk locks everything into a skin-close intimacy that does not project but certainly endures.
Cultural impact
Affecting Mind taps into a lineage of aromatic storytelling that stretches back to ancient trade routes where sesame and cardamom were prized commodities, symbolizing hospitality and exotic allure; in modern times, the fragrance has been embraced by creative communities as a subtle nod to cultural hybridity, sparking conversations about the blending of Eastern spice traditions with Western perfumery techniques, and its presence in boutique collections underscores a growing appreciation for nuanced, cross‑cultural scent narratives that resonate with a globally aware audience, reinforcing the idea that fragrance can serve as a bridge between disparate cultural experiences while honoring the distinct histories of each ingredient.
