The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Once Upon A Time arrived in 2017 as part of Lush's body spray lineup, a fragrance release shaped around storytelling. The composition takes its cue from the naming connection to So White, that familiar territory of orchard innocence and gentle enchantment. Lush's perfumers shaped this one around Brazilian orange oil, working with organic ethanol and regenerative sugar cane as the liquid base. The result reads less like a fairy tale retelling and more like the feeling of one: the moment before the world gets complicated. Simple on the surface, carefully composed underneath. There's a deceptive ease to the whole thing. You spray it on and get fruit, bright and immediate, almost playful.
What makes this composition interesting is its restraint. The apple is built through citrus materials that, layered together, read as orchard fruit rather than candy. The neroli-orange-blossom axis gives it natural sweetness to carry the fruit illusion without leaning on synthetic accords. Rose absolute adds a soft dusting at the edge, enough floral to ground the citrus without turning the scent into a bouquet. The genius is in what's left out. No vanilla to soften the edges. No musk to pad the drydown. No heavy base notes anchoring everything down.
The evolution
The first ten minutes are all citrus snap. Bergamot hits first, quick and slightly bitter, then the Brazilian orange arrives with something rounder and juicier underneath. Apple reads through it from the start, even though no apple molecule is present. By the thirty-minute mark, neroli and orange blossom step forward, and the composition shifts from fruit to flower. The rose absolute surfaces gently in the second hour, barely there, more of a warm suggestion than a note. By hour three, the citrus has burned off and what's left is neroli's green-floral whisper clinging to skin. It fades quietly rather than dramatically. On fabric, the drydown lasts longer, a faint sweetness the next morning, like the memory of breakfast.
Cultural impact
Once Upon A Time sits within Lush's lineup as an accessible, wearable composition that shows up frequently in conversations about realistic fruit fragrances, the kind that read as fruit rather than candy. Wearers note its powdery apple character, a quality that sets it apart from the sharper, sweeter fruit scents common in the mass market. It's often mentioned alongside Lush store comparisons, where the in-store experience and the body spray format are discussed together.
