The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
After the passing of a friend, Lush Perfumer Mark Constantine made this fragrance with benzoin, blackcurrant, and all the things left unsaid. That's the origin. Translated into materials that have their own vocabulary of warmth and tartness. Blackcurrant absolute carries the sweetness of memory, concentrated and close. Benzoin brings the warmth that settles after grief goes quiet. The name says it all, there is no way to say goodbye, so instead, there is this.
The composition doesn't read as minimal or stripped-back, even though some might expect simplicity from its structure. Blackcurrant absolute is the anchor here, something deeper and more concentrated than the fresh green notes you find in lighter fruit compositions. Litsea Cubeba provides a citrus element that offers a flicker of brightness, preventing the blackcurrant from becoming too heavy or overwhelming. Damask Rose absolute doesn't arrive as a separate floral statement in the way you might expect from a more conventional fragrance.
The evolution
The opening is the most assertive phase. Blackcurrant absolute hits immediately with its darkest, most concentrated character, jammy, a little boozy, with none of the fresh berry brightness you might expect from top-note descriptions of this note. Within minutes, Litsea Cubeba adds its citrus-floral quality, but it's a flicker, not a flood. Then the rose arrives, not as a showstopper but as a gentler force, modulating the blackcurrant's intensity and giving it a floral dimension it wouldn't otherwise have. This heart phase is where the fragrance feels most complete: fruit and floral, sweetness and complexity, all working together. As the hours pass, the blackcurrant recedes and the benzoin takes over. The drydown is warm, resinous, quietly sweet. It stays close to the skin, moderate sillage that announces itself only to those in your immediate orbit. On fabric, the blackcurrant lingers into the next day.
Cultural impact
No Way To Say Goodbye arrived in 2024 and found its audience through the resonance of its name. Wearers describe it as the fragrance of someone who processes emotion privately and carries sweetness without apology. The scent has become a notable presence in the brand's Perfume Library offering, appealing to those who seek out Lush for its fragrances rather than its bath products.
