The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Work@holic Base Man sits inside Linn Young's Work@holic line, a connected set of fragrances built around the rhythms of a working day. Base Man carries the foundation of that approach, the entry point and the anchor. There's no grand statement here, no theatrical gesture. Just a composition designed to live on a collar through a full workday and still smell like intention at 6 PM. The fragrance is currently being marketed by Coscentra, which keeps it within reach rather than locked behind a luxury price wall. The opening hits with grapefruit and green apple, bright and a little tart, lifted further by mint and cooled by lavender.
What makes this one worth noticing is the structural honesty. The top is all bright citrus and crisp green apple, a familiar enough opening in the aromatic fougère family, with mint adding a clean, almost mentholated snap and lavender threading a cool current underneath. But the heart pulls in clary sage and clove, which add a dry, herbal sharpness that many mainstream office scents tend to skip or soften into something safe. That clove note does real work here. It prevents the lavender from going soft and keeps the whole composition sitting upright rather than slumping into sweetness.
The evolution
The opening is the loudest this fragrance ever gets. Grapefruit and green apple hit sharp and a little tart, with mint adding a clean, almost mentholated lift that reads like the moment after you rinse your hands in cold water. Lavender threads underneath, cooling everything further and giving the citrus a soapy, just-showered quality that feels intentional rather than accidental. The brightness settles gradually as the herbal heart takes over. Clary sage brings a soft, haylike warmth, the kind of dry sweetness you get from dried herbs hanging in a kitchen. Clove adds a faint medicinal bite, a warmth that cuts through the cool opening and keeps the composition from feeling too crisp or sterile. Geranium leaf provides a green, slightly bitter edge, a sharpness that keeps the middle from going soft or soapy. None of these notes shout.
Cultural impact
Work@holic Base Man sits in a specific pocket of the fragrance world: the everyday aromatic fougère that prioritizes wearability over novelty. The composition leans on a familiar structure, citrus top, herbal heart, mossy base, but assembles those elements with enough care that it doesn't feel like a copy of anything else in the category. Grapefruit, green apple, mint, lavender, clary sage, clove, geranium leaf, oakmoss, patchouli, pine needles, and vetiver all show up, and each one plays a clear role rather than just filling space.
