The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Tapis Volant, the flying carpet. Les Liquides Imaginaires took a fantasy and asked what it would smell like. Not the magic itself, but the sensation of weightlessness beneath you, the warmth of oriental fabric, the dizzying height of a solar journey. Created by Quentin Bisch and Nisrine Bouazzaoui Grillié in 2019, this fragrance belongs to the Les Eaux de L'Est collection, a series built around the idea of olfactory displacement, of transporting the wearer somewhere the body cannot go. The name is the concept. The scent is the proof.
Iris is the anchor, but it's not the iris of butter and cream. This is the dusty kind, the kind that reads like the side of a vintage compact, like pencil shavings, like a memory of something powdery and precise. Mahonial, a proprietary molecule, gives the jasmine a coolness that keeps the heart from going warm too soon. The carrot seed in the opening is unusual, it adds a faintly waxy, mineral quality that some noses read as rubbery at first contact. That initial moment is the fragrance asking whether you're willing to stay with it. Those who do find the powdery iris deepens into something refined, almost nocturnal, with vetiver providing the earth that keeps the fantasy grounded.
The evolution
The opening arrives crisp and aldehydic, bergamot bright, carrot seed waxy, aldehydes lending that characteristic lift. For the first twenty minutes, there's a moment where the combination can read as slightly rubbery or plastic-adjacent. That's the gamble. Then the iris steps forward, and the composition shifts. The jasmine and Mahonial cool the heart without making it cold. The spices are present but restrained, warm rather than sharp. By the second hour, sandalwood and tonka bean arrive, creamy and soft, while white musk keeps everything close to the skin. The vetiver and Ambroxan in the base are the final act: earthy, slightly smoky, a drydown that stays intimate and lasting. On most skin types, expect a full workday of wear, with moderate sillage that rewards proximity over projection.
