The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Target launched in 2013 as part of La Rive's men's fragrance line. It arrived as a confident masculine composition, a straightforward aromatic-woody blend built around a recognizable structure: citrus and gin at the top, green and rooty botanicals in the middle, and a woody base of sandalwood, vetiver, and blackwood underneath. The composition doesn't lean on celebrity endorsement or luxury mythology to make its case. Instead it presents itself as a well-executed masculine fragrance, the kind that lets the juice speak for itself rather than the packaging or the campaign behind it.
What's interesting here is the gin note. Many masculine fragrances reach for citrus or aquatic opens, but Target goes for juniper and botanical gin instead, which gives the first thirty minutes a herbal, slightly boozy character that feels more deliberate than the usual sharp citrus blast. The orris root in the heart reinforces that direction, pulling the composition toward something powdery and rooty rather than purely sharp or metallic.
The evolution
The first ten minutes are all sparkle. Bergamot and lemon hit bright, almost sharp, with gin and juniper threading through to give the opening a botanical warmth. It's brisk, clean, distinctly aromatic, the kind of opening that announces itself without shouting. By the twenty-minute mark the citrus has softened and the juniper note has deepened, pulling the cypress and woody elements into focus. Now the scent smells like damp bark and cool air, the orris root lending a soft, earthy sweetness underneath. The green doesn't disappear, it just stops shouting and starts settling into the composition. Two hours in and the base has settled completely: sandalwood and vetiver take over, with blackwood adding a dark depth that anchors the whole thing. The vetiver does what vetiver does best here, grounding everything in dry earth and giving the fragrance its quiet masculine weight.
Cultural impact
Since its 2013 launch, Target has found a steady audience among fragrance wearers who appreciate a distinctive aromatic-woody profile at an accessible price. Its gin-juniper opening gave it a recognizable hook, and that character helped it build word of mouth over the years. The scent doesn't chase trends or court collectors looking for limited distribution; instead it earns its reputation through sheer accessibility and consistency. Reviewers tend to note its quality construction relative to its price tier, and it has become a familiar recommendation for buyers exploring beyond the most common designer offerings.
