The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Ortie Blanche began as Herbae, a 2019 composition from perfumers Nadège Le Garlantezec and Shyamala Maisondieu. The brief was simple and a little stubborn: capture the wild nettle flower at the heart of the Provençal landscape, that botanical force the perfumers describe as encapsulating untamed beauty. In 2025, the fragrance returned under a new name, redesigned with a modern, minimalist look that still speaks to the hills, stone walls and sun-baked fields of southern France. Ortie Blanche, literally white nettle, keeps the original's green-fresh soul while shedding any excess weight. The scent carries the cool sting of nettle stems cut in morning air, a green clarity that feels both raw and refined.
What makes this composition interesting is what it leaves out. There is no vanilla cushioning the drydown, no oud staking a claim, no amber blanket smoothing the edges. Instead, the perfumers stack green materials, ambrette seed absolute at the top for its musky, almost skin-like warmth, then white rose, nettle and Arctic bramble woven together at the heart. Italian bergamot adds its citrus brightness to the opening, lending a clean, lifted quality before it softens into the composition.
The evolution
The opening belongs to ambrette and that bracing green top, the ambrette seed reading almost animalic in its warmth, a musky skin scent wrapped in fresh nettle stems. Italian bergamot lifts the whole thing like light through a window, citrus-bright but not sharp, adding a sparkling clarity to the initial spray. As the opening fades, the heart takes over, white rose and Arctic bramble arriving together, the bramble adding a tart, almost jammy fruitiness that keeps the rose from tipping into soapiness. The nettle is the constant, a green hum running underneath everything, threading through every phase of the wear. As hours pass, the bergamot mellows, and the musk from the ambrette begins to settle into something skin-close and warm, a soft, almost intimate warmth that feels like it belongs to you.
Cultural impact
Ortie Blanche sits comfortably in the conversation alongside green-fresh compositions like Hermès Eau de Rhubarbe Écarlate and Jo Malone Blackberry & Bay, sharing that tart-fruity-meets-botanical register that defines a whole corner of modern perfumery. The redesign from Herbae to Ortie Blanche in 2025 paired a more minimalist visual language with the same green-fresh character that defined the original. The new bottle and packaging strip away ornamentation, letting the liquid itself carry the visual weight, a quiet nod to the botanical clarity inside.
