The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Pier NY was conceived as a fragrant tribute to New York's waterfronts, where the Atlantic meets concrete. Jérôme Epinette was tasked in 2021 to bottle that clash of sea-spray and city grit for Kierin's Graffiti Art Collection. The name points directly to the iconic piers that frame the skyline, inviting wearers to imagine standing at the water's edge with the city's energy at their back. Epinette's approach was to start with the most literal waterfront element, salt, and then introduce unexpected urban and herbal counterpoints to prevent the fragrance from feeling like a simple beach scent. Salt serves as the connective tissue between the city and the sea, while eucalyptus adds a sharp, almost medicinal freshness that recalls mentholated air near the water. Fig brings a soft green sweetness that nods to the city's parks and waterfront greenery, creating an opening that feels both raw and refined.
Epinette's note selection for Pier NY reflects a philosophy of contrasts, where each layer intentionally disrupts the one before it to create tension and interest. The opening pair of salt and eucalyptus creates an immediate tension between briny and sharp, which is then softened by fig's sweetness. The heart of violet and mimosa represents a deliberate shift toward warmth and intimacy, replacing the cool marine energy with something more approachable and floral. The drydown resolves this tension by combining seaweed's marine authenticity with sage's herbal bitterness, creating a base that feels both natural and complex.
The evolution
The fragrance opens with a three-note salvo of salt, eucalyptus, and fig, where salt immediately establishes the marine anchor and eucalyptus provides the cool, energizing lift that makes the opening feel urban rather than purely coastal. Fig softens the edges within the first minutes, adding a subtle fruitiness that keeps the composition from feeling too austere. As the heart develops, violet takes the lead with its delicate, powdery floral character, while mimosa introduces a golden, slightly honeyed warmth that elevates the overall sweetness and creates a sunlit, Intimate mid-stage. The drydown represents the most complex phase, where seaweed adds an authentic marine bitterness that distinguishes this from generic fresh fragrances. Sage contributes an herbal, slightly bitter quality that pairs naturally with the marine notes, creating an aromatic depth that feels sophisticated and grounded.
Cultural impact
Since its 2021 debut, Pier NY has become a go‑to for fans of clean‑yet‑spicy urban aromatics, often cited in forums as the scent that captures a boardwalk stroll at sunrise. Its inclusion in the Graffiti Art Collection positions it alongside other visually‑driven releases, reinforcing Kierin’s reputation for turning cityscapes into wearable art. Wearers frequently mention the fragrance as a subtle statement of coastal confidence in a concrete jungle.
