The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Released in 2016 as part of the Kemi collection, Aqua Regia arrived with a clear point of view. The fragrance opens with bright citrus and a fleeting rose note that gives way to something cooler and more complex. Eucalyptus takes hold early, shifting the composition away from any expectation of a traditional floral. The heart introduces musk alongside vetiver and patchouli, grounding the fragrance with earthy depth. As it develops, resinous oud emerges and blends with vanilla, creating a warm base that balances the initial sharpness. The overall effect is a fragrance that moves confidently through multiple stages, from crisp opening through aromatic complexity to a sustained, resinous dry down.
Aromatic and oriental, the eucalyptus places Aqua Regia in the first camp, but the oud and vanilla base pulls it firmly into the second. The composition holds both families simultaneously, creating an interplay between cool and warm elements. Eucalyptus brings a cool, almost mentholated clarity to an otherwise warm base, a breath of something sharp in a room full of resin and wood. This contrast between the camphorated top notes and the deep, resinous base notes defines the fragrance's structure.
The evolution
The opening is bright. Bergamot and rose arrive together, the bergamot cutting clean and citrusy, the rose adding a brief, sweet floral warmth that almost softens the whole introduction. Almost. Within minutes, the eucalyptus announces itself and shifts the register entirely. The camphorated edge cuts through the sweetness and the composition recalibrates around that sharpness. The heart belongs to the eucalyptus and musk, with vetiver and patchouli beginning to root the fragrance downward. The musk keeps it from going fully cold, a skin-warm quality that prevents the camphor from becoming antiseptic. The base begins to establish itself and the warmth starts to reassert. Oud arrives quietly, without fanfare, resinous and deep rather than aggressive or animalic. Vanilla follows, smoothing the edges and bringing a subtle sweetness that tempers the camphor.
Cultural impact
Aqua Regia presents a distinctive approach to fragrance composition, combining aromatic and oriental elements through its use of eucalyptus alongside oud and vanilla. The camphorated quality of the eucalyptus note adds a cool, sharp dimension that contrasts with the warm, resinous base. Collectors drawn to this style appreciate the way the fragrance navigates between different scent families, moving from initial coolness through aromatic complexity to a warm, sustained finish. The composition has maintained interest among those who seek fragrances that offer more than straightforward categorization.
