The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Runaway was born from Karen Walker's love of contrast, pairing the brand's playful edge with a dark, untamed forest vibe. In 2017, perfumer Veronique Nyberg set out to capture a midnight trek: the crackle of camp firewood, the sharp bite of black pepper crushed underfoot, and the promise of something unfamiliar waiting just beyond the tree line. The fragrance was designed to feel like an escape, a departure from the expected, rooted in warmth and spontaneity rather than polished perfection. Nyberg built the opening around bold, spicy brightness and let the composition evolve naturally into something quieter and more Intimate.
The note selection reflects a deliberate philosophy of tension and resolution: the opening spices and citrus create an immediate, almost confrontational energy, while the rose introduces vulnerability and softness at the center. The base notes then reassert groundedness, pulling the fragrance back toward earth and warmth. Each layer was chosen not for novelty but for how it converses with the others: black pepper demands the coolness of lemon, the rose requires the spice to give it context, and the vanilla in the base exists specifically to soften the sharpness of the vetiver and resin. It is a composition built on balance, where every note earns its place through contrast rather than volume.
The evolution
The opening chapter of Runaway is written in black pepper, cardamom, cinnamon and a sudden flash of lemon, a combination that hits with the immediacy of cold night air on warm skin. This is a confident, spice-forward start that announces itself without apology. As the top notes begin to settle, a single rose emerges at the heart, its presence both calming and slightly unexpected given the ruggedness of what came before. The rose does not compete with the spice; it softens it, domesticates it, makes it approachable. The final act belongs to the drydown, where vetiver, elemi resin and guaiac wood create an earthy, smoky atmosphere that evokes smoldering embers, while vanilla quietly weaves in to add a layer of warmth that makes the entire composition feel worn and beloved, like a favorite leather jacket.
Cultural impact
Since its 2017 debut, Runaway has quietly influenced the niche market by championing a bold spice‑forward profile that balances bright citrus with deep woody undertones. Its pepper‑cardamom opening resonated with younger consumers seeking adventurous scents, while the rose heart offered a familiar anchor for traditionalists. Over the years, the fragrance has been referenced in runway shows and editorial spreads as a symbol of confident, gender‑fluid expression, encouraging other brands to explore similar aromatic contrasts.
