The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Hidden Amber emerged from John Richmond's Unknown Pleasures line, a collection that strips gender tags to let the wearer write their own story. In 2022 perfumer Guillaume Flavigny set out to capture a secret that lives beneath the surface, an amber that is not blaring, but quietly revealed. Rather than leading with the expected warm accord, he opens with bergamot and frankincense, building a composed entrance before settling into the amber and cedarwood that give the fragrance its identity. The name frames the drydown as a discovery, something that unfolds over hours rather than announcing itself on first spray.
The note structure reflects a philosophy of restraint. Bergamot and frankincense in the opening establish a smoke-and-citrus tension that prevents the composition from feeling soft at its start. The heart, built around iris and lotus, offers elegance without loud florals, keeping the overall character quiet and considered. The drydown, anchored by amber and styrax, gives the fragrance its signature warmth without crossing into sweetness. Cedarwood provides woody structure that supports the amber rather than competing with it. The result is a fragrance where each phase earns attention rather than demanding it.
The evolution
The opening takes an unexpected route for a fragrance built around amber. Bergamot provides sharp citrus clarity, but frankincense smoke arrives quickly behind it, creating an aromatic duality that shapes the first act. Ylang-Ylang adds tropical warmth without pushing the composition toward sweetness. The heart shifts the tone toward stillness. Iris brings powdery elegance, with its root-like quality introducing a sophisticated dimension. Lotus keeps the middle lifted, and violet rounds out the transition, preventing the heart from becoming heavy. By the time the drydown arrives, the incense from the opening has become a memory, replaced by amber warmth, cedarwood richness, and the dark resin of styrax. This is where the fragrance earns its name, revealing the amber that was hidden beneath the more elusive opening notes.
Cultural impact
Since its 2022 debut, Hidden Amber has become a quiet favorite among fans of the Unknown Pleasures line, praised for its balanced gender‑free vibe and its ability to sit comfortably in both club‑after‑hours and daytime creative studios. Its powdery‑amber profile is often compared to the brand’s earlier Black Metal, yet softer, earning it a niche spot in the modern oriental‑woody niche.
