Why it exists.
The beginning
Mossy Soil is one of two debut fragrances from JMP Artisan Perfumes, and it was the more ambitious of the pair. Named for the damp, decomposing forest floor, that specific moment after rain when earth releases its deepest scent, the fragrance was built to capture something untamed. Jakub Pietrynka wasn't interested in the forest as scenery. He wanted the forest as truth, the version that exists before anyone thought to frame it. Mossy Soil was his answer: a composition that translates woodland character into something wearable without diluting it. The scent draws you into that liminal space where nature's raw power meets human interpretation, where every inhale carries the weight of decomposing leaves and rain-soaked bark.
The pyramid is a study in structured contrast. Aldehydes and citrus open bright and sharp, creating an almost shimmering quality, then the earth arrives to claim it. The heart is where things get interesting: jasmine sambac and ylang-ylang bring warmth, but iris powder and hedione keep them honest. Frankincense smoke threads through, giving the florals an almost sacred quality. Down the pyramid, the base is dense with animalic, civet, castoreum, labdanum layered over oakmoss. Not loud. Close. The kind of depth that stays with you long after you've left the room. This is classic chypre architecture, but the materials feel natural, tangible, not synthetic.
The evolution
The opening sparkles. Aldehydes and citrus arrive first, bergamot, lemon, creating a luminous quality that flickers over the skin like light breaking through canopy. As the top notes begin to settle, wet earth and incense gradually take over, signaling a shift toward the fragrance's true character. The florals arrive next, but they don't announce themselves. Jasmine sambac, ylang-ylang, rose, warm, tender, like flowers being reclaimed by the forest. The real tell is the animalic. Civet, castoreum, labdanum layered over oakmoss. This is where the fragrance lives. A warm, dense, intimate drydown that stays close to the skin and lingers on fabric for days. Mossy Soil doesn't evolve dramatically. It deepens. Settles. Becomes part of you.
