The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Eccentricity by JMP Artisan Perfumes was created by Jakub Pietrynka. The fragrance takes its name from the unexpected, the idea that a scent can hold contradictions without resolving them. The composition opens with bright caramel and coconut, quickly joined by coffee and butter notes that give the fragrance its gourmand character. There's a tartness from sour cherry that cuts through the sweetness early on, preventing the scent from becoming one-dimensional. The florals, rose and jasmine, emerge as the top notes settle, but they remain in the background, never overpowering the sweeter elements. The drydown brings white musk and ambergris forward, with vanilla and almond settling close to the skin.
The note structure is unusual. Caramel and coconut arrive together in the opening, a sweet-tropical pairing that could easily tip into sunscreen territory, but sour cherry cuts through with a tartness that keeps things grounded. The heart is cappuccino and butter: the espresso note isn't delicate, it's textured, present, almost audible. Sandalwood and vanilla layer underneath to soften what could be harsh, while almond adds an nuttiness that bridges the coffee and the sweetness. White musk and ambergris in the base give it staying power without heaviness, a quiet anchor for something that opens so boldly.
The evolution
The first minutes hit sharp. Caramel and coconut arrive bright, almost aggressive, with the sour cherry lending a tartness that cuts through the sweetness. There's a chemical edge to the opening that some will recognize and others will question, but it doesn't linger. Within the hour, the cappuccino and butter warm up, creating a richer, more rounded experience. The florals fade faster than expected, rose and jasmine become background texture rather than statement, supporting the sweeter notes without dominating. The drydown belongs to the white musk and ambergris, which provide a clean, slightly salty foundation. Vanilla and almond settle close to the skin, present but restrained, holding the sweet-gourmand character without screaming it. Throughout the wear, the fragrance evolves continuously, with different notes taking center stage at different times.
Cultural impact
Eccentricity occupies a specific space in the gourmand genre: sweet enough to be approachable, warm enough to be comforting, with enough coffee and butter to feel substantial rather than generic. The fragrance appeals to those who appreciate gourmand scents but want something with more depth and complexity. Its combination of edible notes with unexpected elements creates a scent that feels both familiar and fresh, making it a notable entry in the niche perfume market.
