The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
L'Eau d'Issey Summer 2007 Femme arrived as part of a limited edition green fragrance collection, a seasonal experiment within an already established line. Issey Miyake Parfums had developed its identity around certain core principles, but this summer iteration asked a different question: what happens when that clarity turns green? The 2007 summer edition built on the house's established approach and introduced botanical elements. Green leaves and blackcurrant appeared alongside the existing structure, adding a different character to the composition. There was a clear shift in direction, moving away from aquatic toward something more terrestrial.
The green notes set this fragrance apart from most summer flankers of its era, which tended toward generic citrus or aquatic accords. Blackcurrant adds tartness that reads as freshness rather than sweetness, a clever move that keeps the composition from softening too early. Rose water appears in the top accord, lending a subtle floral presence underneath the initial burst. The heart combines lily of the valley and freesia, both white florals that provide structure and depth without relying on aquatic elements.
The evolution
The opening arrives with immediate green notes that cut through with a sharpness that asserts itself, blackcurrant adding a tart berry bite that makes the top feel alive rather than sterile. This initial phase gradually transitions as the green notes begin to shift, ceding ground to the heart's white florals. Lily of the valley appears first, settling in alongside freesia's slightly rounder, more powdery floral character. Peony adds fullness without heaviness. By the second hour, the fragrance has settled into its middle register, present but never demanding attention. The base arrives quietly. Osmanthus and violet form a soft, intimate drydown that stays close to the skin. Tuberose is present but tamed, its creaminess tempered by the woody notes that anchor the composition.
Cultural impact
L'Eau d'Issey Summer 2007 Femme turned the house's established character in a green direction that felt neither forced nor commercial. Wearers who encountered it during its original season tend to describe it as the most distinctive of the summer flankers, something that stood apart from the typical beach-oriented releases. The 2007 release occupies a particular moment in fragrance history, positioned after a period when certain fragrance directions had become overused and before consumer preferences shifted toward heavier, more assertion-forward compositions.
